So why buy free range?
Having lived in and around the Hampshire countryside all my life, I have noticed farms closing or falling into disrepair due to lack of money, government and public support. The super markets sell low priced meat from poorly bred animals. These animals are reared in unnecessarily bad conditions in order that the farmers can meet the price demands of the supermarket in order to stay in business and keep their livelihood. It would seem that if the government had their way British farming would stop altogether, giving way to more housing and yet even less industry, but then where would we get our meat, milk and eggs? The answer is simple, other countries. Other countries where the laws on animal welfare are practically non existent and food can be produced even cheaper no matter what the moral and ethical cost!
So what can you do? Simple, find a local Free Range Farm, Butcher or other Free Range supplier and support them, if you really must go to the super market as even I do for non-meat items, look for Free Range products on the shelf. The point of this site is to promote Small Business's and Farm's that supply Free Range meats and local produce.
